Cartagena didn't reach the international plastic-surgery map through marketing. It got there through a combination of three factors: a strong Colombian school with a real tradition in liposculpture and breast surgery, accredited clinics that invested in modern operating rooms, and procedure costs that, compared with the United States or Europe, leave a real margin for flight, hotel, and recovery without compromising quality. On top of that, one detail few people mention: the city is genuinely pleasant to recover in. The Caribbean climate, the hotel infrastructure of Bocagrande and Castillogrande, and the option to do rehabilitation walking along a safe seaside neighborhood made medical tourism settle here faster than in many other Colombian cities.
The surgical menu splits between body and facial work. On the body side, the most-requested operations are 360 liposuction with VASER HD definition, BBL (Brazilian butt lift), abdominoplasty after pregnancy, and breast augmentation. On the facial side, the list is led by ultrasonic rhinoplasty, deep plane or SMAS facelift for patients between 50 and 65, and upper blepharoplasty. More patients are combining procedures in a single operation — the classic "mommy makeover" (abdominoplasty plus breast surgery) is the most-requested combination, followed by BBL plus abdominoplasty. Combinations are safe when performed by a team that handles them routinely; when done occasionally, they're not.
The first practical rule is simple: ask to see the surgeon's registration with the Colombian Society of Plastic Surgery (SCCP) and verify that the facility has a current operating license with the Health Department. Both are public records. Beyond paperwork, three signs separate an experienced surgeon from one still building casework: they discuss your anatomy before discussing price, they spend at least as much time on the recovery plan as on the procedure itself, and they tell you "no" when a request doesn't match your body. A surgeon who promises anything to anyone at any budget is over-selling.
Reference ranges for 2026, all-inclusive (surgeon, anesthesiologist, accredited facility, implants when applicable, garments, and follow-ups):
Quotes substantially below these ranges almost always indicate a cut somewhere — an implant brand without INVIMA registration, sedation instead of general anesthesia, or a non-accredited facility. Always ask for the line-item breakdown before comparing.
Most established Cartagena clinics work with specialized health financing partners that offer 6 to 36 monthly payments at COP rates, without complicated guarantors. They also accept international credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, Amex), which lets international patients use travel rewards and split payments with their issuing bank. What we don't recommend: financing surgery with unsecured personal loans outside the clinic's own program — the line between "easy" and "hidden fees" is thinner than it seems. If a clinic offers "zero down and 60 months at zero interest", read the fine print before signing.
Safety in plastic surgery isn't a slogan — it's a verifiable checklist. Before: full preoperative work-up (CBC, coagulation panel, liver and kidney function, EKG from age 40, echocardiogram if there's cardiac history), evaluation by a board-certified anesthesiologist, and discontinuation of blood-thinning medications and supplements that increase bleeding (high-dose vitamin E, omega-3, ginkgo). During: general anesthesia for major cases, continuous monitoring, surgical suite with current accreditation. After: thromboprophylaxis (early ambulation, compression stockings, anticoagulant when indicated), compression garment or dressings per procedure, drains when needed, and a minimum of four follow-up visits over six months. For international patients, two additional pieces: an in-person consultation at least 24 hours before surgery, and telemedicine follow-up during the first six weeks after returning home.
The typical timeline we recommend to patients arriving from the United States, Canada, Mexico, Spain, or Central America:
An accredited clinic in Colombia meets, at minimum, the standards set by Resolution 3100 of the Ministry of Health for surgical services. The best ones also hold accreditation from ICONTEC or international bodies (JCI). In Cartagena this translates to positive-pressure operating rooms, autoclave sterilization, board-certified anesthesiologists on permanent call, and on-site emergency response capability. When a clinic can't show current accreditation and licensing, it's not an option.
Cartagena's climate has two practical consequences. First, humidity helps mucosa (especially relevant in rhinoplasty) and tissue in general dry out less during recovery. Second, Caribbean sun is the direct enemy of scars: a single beach afternoon before month six can leave hyperpigmented lines that no laser fully removes. The care plan therefore includes SPF 50+ sunscreen, wide-brim hats, scar bandages or silicone sheets, and no open-water swimming before 6 to 8 weeks.
It depends on the procedure. The most-requested aesthetic operations run between USD 2,500 and 6,500 all-inclusive. Combination cases (mommy makeover, BBL + tummy tuck) range from USD 7,900 to 12,000. Always request a breakdown: surgeon's fee, anesthesia, OR, implants, and follow-ups.
Minor procedures (blepharoplasty, chin, single-area lipo): 7 to 10 days. Major procedures (abdominoplasty, BBL, mommy makeover, facelift): 10 to 14 days. The exact plan is confirmed at the in-person consultation 24 hours before surgery.
Yes, as long as you verify three things: the surgeon's SCCP registration, the clinic's current operating license, and a board-certified anesthesiologist. All three are publicly verifiable. A clinic that can't show them isn't a safe choice, regardless of the offer.
Yes. We accept international credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, Amex), international wire transfers, and local financing in COP for up to 36 months. Currency conversion is done at the exchange rate on the day of payment.
The basic panel includes CBC, coagulation panel, liver and kidney function, glucose, pregnancy test when applicable, and EKG from age 40. They can be done in your home city 2 to 4 weeks before travel; we send you the exact list after the initial consultation.
Office work: 7 to 14 days depending on the procedure. Physical work: 4 to 8 weeks. For unrestricted gym training: 6 to 12 weeks. The exact schedule depends on the procedure and is provided in writing at discharge.
Yes, when it's safe to do so. The most common combinations are the mommy makeover (breasts + abdomen) and BBL + abdominoplasty. The surgeon decides based on your cardiovascular health and total OR time — the general rule is no more than 6 to 7 hours of anesthesia in a single session.
Telemedicine follow-up during the first 6 weeks resolves the vast majority of questions and minor complications. If something serious arises, we coordinate with a board-certified plastic surgeon in your city for in-person evaluation. Major complications are uncommon when patient selection and surgical technique are correct.
Yes. Reconstructive work includes breast reconstruction after mastectomy, scar revision, repair of congenital defects, and post-bariatric body contouring. Many of these procedures have partial coverage from international insurance — we help with the documentation.
